Study for Canopus in oil

Canopus_oil_study.jpg

Canopus is the third and final allegorical figure in my series honoring all nude artist’s models. She is named after the brightest star that can be seen in the southern hemisphere. Canopus allegorically represents the awakening adult when childhood memories flicker through our minds like lightening in a night sky. She is interacting with a symbolic sundial the same way that the actual projecting piece, the gnomon, tells the time, by casting a shadow. This symbolically represents the fact that matter, energy, space and time can only exist as long as there is movement in our universe.
